Foundry BGP MD5 Configuration Encryption

Foundry uses an hash to encrypt the MD5 passwords in the config (not the MD5 used for the packets). It does not use the same hash as Cisco which is a shame because Cisco uses type 7 encryption of which a reverse algorithm does exist. i.e. it's not a one-way-hash.

Today when configuring a peer I discovered that the Foundry hashing mechanism is probably also pretty easy to reverse. Look at this example:
Password: nikn93(b
Hash:         $g=Dg{8p2
The first that we can clearly see is that there are 2 exactly the same characters in the hash and in the password. So this indicates at least that an 'n' is a 'g'. Let's do some more testing:
Password: mekker
Hash:         $6nDDnU
Ok, some more evidence rises, the 'k' is an 'D' and the 'e' is an 'n'. Which both samples prove. It looks like this is a keymapping algorithm (which obviously is pretty quick to crack).

Here is a keymapping of the alfabet, digits and some special signs:
Password: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
Hash:        $!2d@nG"b=?D^6gsSRU-oir+Cx
Password: 01234567890-=!@#%^&*()
Hash:         $QZ|83OmYW{QM$V1Iu<>Xpz
I'll work up on generating a full keymapping table to decrypt these, eventually resulting in a perl script that will decode these hashes.

Bugs in Mac OS X 10.4 on an iBook G3

I've discovered some bugs in Mac OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger). I'm running Tiger on an Apple iBook G3 14" (2002 Edition). The problems I've currently encountered:

  • I've been using the Canon Utilities for the Macintosh on my PowerBook to work with my EOS 350D, however it seems that the CanonWindow tool is unable to communicate with the Camera on Mac OS X 10.4, while it was able to do so on 10.3. Getting the pictures from the camera using Image Capture or iPhoto just works fine
  • Battery Support: It looks like Mac OS X 10.4 has troubles with my iBook's battery, while it's battery life on 10.3 was already diminished to about 1 hour of battery life it has been sucked down to 0 minutes on 10.4. Sometimes it even can't find my battery.

There are some more caveats I've found, but I haven't got any large details on them. It is sure that Mac OS X 10.4 is built for a G4 and not for a G3. It feels sluggisher on a G3 then 10.3 did and the new Dashboard tool is extremely slow on this G3 500. I'm glad I haven't installed this on my Titanium Powerbook as the Canon Tools are broken. Let's wait for the first service release of 10.4 before upgrading the powerbook.

Rock Werchter Combi Tickets SOLD OUT

I see quite some searches coming by for 'rock werchter', 'rock werchter tickets' and so on. I have NO tickets for sale whatsoever. You are finding my site because I've been to Rock Werchter last year. But I'm not planning on going this year!

Maybe there are still some tickets for sale at Music Machine in Sittard. They sell official Rock Werchter tickets, but I don't know if they also are sold out!

Some pictures of SIttard

Today I went out for a walk and to take some pictures of Sittard. You can see them here. Also some shots of the fiber they are laying out at the Rijksweg and some pictures of how KPN fixes their telephone lines.  Also some pictures of a nice stack of bikes.

The original size of these pictures was 3456x2304. But I resized them to 1024x860 and lowered the quality to make them more accessible via the web :)

Canon EOS 350D

A while back I promised everyone to write some more about the new digicam I bought. It's an Canon EOS 350D, Digital SLR. Here you can find the review of it made by DPreview.com (it has been updated!)
EOS 350D Black Body

As with all Digital SLR's they aren't really cheap, actually quite expensive, but  I still had some 'verlofdagen' left so I could get it a lot cheaper. I got the EOS 350D with the 18-55mm lens. When I got the box to my surpise it stated that I could get a free 256 Meg CF card for it. That's nice, but not really necessary as I already bought a 1G CF card before that. Just after 2 weeks of owning it I almost made 700 pictures (mostly of our cats running around the house).

After deciding that I wanted more telephoto range I scouted marktplaats and saw a Canon EF 90-300USM lens for sale. The Canon EF 90-300USM is not that great quality for a lens, but the price is also very cheap for this range. So I got this lens yesterday and I must say it's worth the little money you pay for it. It feels cheap and light, but does work just fine. Also after seeing why the previous owner selled it I know also know what will be my next lens purchase. The Sigma 50-500MM :)

My search history indicates that quite some people are searching for drivers for an EOS 350D on Linux. Well you only need gphoto to do this, Altough I only tested this once as I use my Apple with Mac OS X to get the pictures of my camera.

More Info, might come in the future, but now I don't feel like writing any more :)
