Areca Issues!

Last week we received a new SuperMicro server to setup another 4 disk SATA raid using an Areca ARC-1110. We already had 2 of these boxes in production (however a little older model) so we tought it would work pretty nicely. It seems there are quite some differences between these 2 servers. Let me list them:

The SuperMicro 5014C-MT vs the 5013C-MT. The first difference is the change of processor socket. The new 5014C-MT uses the LGA775 socket, the other difference that is seen directly is the change to Broadcom NICS instead of the Intel they used to have. Well this should be no problem, only changing from e1000 to tg3 drivers in the Linux kernel for this box should suffice.

Microsoft's xBox 360 and PowerPC

Microsoft has released specifications for the xbox 360. It seems the new xbox from Microsoft is going to be based on a PowerPC CPU. I find this kinda weird as Microsoft always was a x86 player. This could mean some things:
  • Microsoft is going to revive it's NT4 PowerPC version (unlikely)
  • Microsoft is going to port Windows (again) to PowerPC (likely) and will make a version that will run on Mac's (probable but unlikely)
  • Microsoft is going to build an entire new OS for the new xbox.
  • Microsoft is going to use the knowledge they bought from Connextix to emulate x86 code on a PowerPC (VirtualPC for Mac)
There are some problems for the consumer with this approach:
  1. Microsoft Xbox 1 games aren't going to work anymore as they are all x86 code will this new platform has a powerpc code. Rumors: There is going to be a higer end version of the Xbox 360 that will be backward compatible concerning games (also see the VirtualPC note above)
  2. Game developers will have a harder time as porting games from the PC platform to the Xbox platform will be more work.
Oh, I don't like the xbox at all, I'll go for a PSX anytime ;)

Sun trough a cloud

This image was shot this afternoon with my Canon EOS 350D at f/10, 1/250 at ISO 200 with an 18mm (x1.6). I like it :) It looks like the sun is shooting trough the cloud with it rays. Click the picture for the original full size 8MP JPEG.
